CLASSROOM STRUCTURE PLAN
My Ideal Middle School Social Studies Classroom
My Ideal Middle School Social Studies Classroom
My classroom will be one in which students will be presented with a comfortable set-up that allows for flexibility. When someone enters my classroom they will see a good deal of shelving that will hold classroom texts, outside reading if students would like, and other activities relating not only to Social Studies, but including games as well.
Providing adequate shelf space can help keep a classroom orderly and prevent any safety hazards such as messes on the floor.
Anyone who walks into my classroom will also see that there are many different seating options for students. The idea behind providing students with different seating arrangements is to help students who prefer to sit in groups or sit by themselves, not feel pressured in the classroom because they have to sit in one or the other. The benefit of this classroom seating structure is it allows for group work by giving the tables and desks space to move together or apart, making group work time less chaotic, and reinforcing the opportunity to develop a sense of community. This set-up will provide a House system for their seats that will be changed each year to be focused around something popular, such as the NFL.
When space is left on the floor, this gives students the opportunity to sit on the floor and still be able to see the Smartboard. In my ideal classroom I would have some yoga mats or cushions in the corner storage for students who wanted to sit on the floor so that way they could still have something to sit on, but allows them to move around the classroom while the class is working. The back corner with the plush sofa and beanbag chairs is dedicated to independent/partner work time. This area is also set-up so students have the chance to move out of their seats to get their work done. Movement around the classroom is critical, especially for students who are in adolescence so they are able to get up and move during class, which will help them have an easier time focusing on material they are learning.
The walls ideally will have posters on them describing how the house system their desks and tables are set-up in works, there will also be posters with quotes from celebrities and people that my students would be studying. These posters will help push students toward a Growth Mindset in my classroom.
There are easels that are placed at the front of the classroom, these will have my learning target, agenda, and any assignments written on them. With these easels having this information on them, it helps keep the Smartboard open at the beginning of class for the students to play a game, or on busier days, see what the topic for the beginning-of-class meeting may be.
